Long Atip, Baram
Kayans of the Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM/SIB) in Sarawak are converging at Long Atip in Baram to commemorate the 70th anniversary of their conversion to Christianity. The anniversary celebrations will run from 5 - 7 June 2017. Coincidentally, 5th June 1947 is the official date of their conversion as recorded by pioneering missionary the late C. Hudson Southwell in his book Unchartered Waters.
The celebrations will cover praise & worship, sermons, cultural presentations and games. Slide shows and a commemorative souvenir book provide a glimpse of the Kayan's historical journey of faith first begun by our grandparents who took the leap of faith 70 years ago. The highlight of the celebrations is the unveiling of the 70th anniversary plaque on June 6.
Cultural troupes from Kalimantan and Sg Asap are expected to showcase Kayan's traditional dances at night. A mega long dance covering the whole length of Long Atip, called Hivan Upah, will be held on the afternoon of June 7. Local residents and guests will join the longdance in full traditional costumes.
A crowd of 3000 Kayans are expected to attend the celebrations, including a cultural troupe of Kayans from Malinau and Miau Baru in Kalimantan. Others come from Sg Asap, Belaga, Tubau, Bintulu, Kuching; Miri, and Baram.
Long Atip is accessible using 4x4 off-road vehicles via ferry crossing at Long Lama. Celebrants are urged to drive safely and observe road signages, especially when driving on the logging roads.
